Will the streak continue for the Freddie Mercury biopic after nabbing a Golden Globe last month for Best Picture? Or will the star-studded cast of “A Star is Born” win over Oscar hearts and minds?

Will 2019 finally be the year when the superhero genre, and the $1 billion-earning “Black Panther” in particular, finally receives some much-needed love from Hollywood? Or will one of two dramas that tied for the most Oscar nominations with 10 each, “Roma” and “The Favourite,” receive the Oscar nod?
Or will the movie industry’s biggest award go to one of three nominated comedy-dramas: “Green Book,” the politically charged “Vice” or “BlacKkKlansman.”
If anything, it’s a year of firsts: the first Best Picture nomination for streaming giant Netflix, the first for a superhero movie and Marvel, the first Best Picture and Best Director nominations for Spike Lee. There should be plenty of intrigue when the 91st Academy Awards airs on Feb. 24.
And you can test your own prediction skills and win cash prizes in our Oscars 2019 contest, sponsored by Bookhouse Cinema, 715 E. Broadway St.
Simply send us your picks, and you could win Bookhouse Cinema gift cards for $150, $100 or $75 depending on how many winners you predict correctly.
Read the rules below, then fill out your ballot or go to joplinglobe.com to make your picks.
Only one entry per person will be permitted, and only one prize will be awarded per household. Mailed entries from the same household must be mailed in individual envelopes. Employees of The Joplin Globe and their family members are not eligible to participate or win.
Entries may be dropped off at The Joplin Globe’s customer service desk at 117 E. Fourth St; mailed to “Oscar 2019 Contest” at P.O. Box 7, Joplin, MO 64802; or entered online at joplinglobe.com by end of the day on Friday, Feb. 22.
Entries that do not have complete name and address information will be voided. Entries with unmarked categories will be counted with the missing categories voided.
Winning entries will be selected from ballots marked with the most winners in the Academy Awards categories listed on the ballot. First place will win $150, second place will win $100 and third place will win $75.
Tie-breakers will be determined, if necessary, by how early a ballot is submitted. The collection box will be emptied daily; postmarks will determine the date of mailed entries and emails will be marked by when they appear on the Globe’s email server.
Winners must complete a W-9 form with the Globe’s business office in order to claim prizes.
A list of winners will be printed in a future issue of the Globe.
