Golden Globes 2019 Shut Out Female Directors In 3 Major Film Categories

The 2019 Oscar nominations are in…and they’re all for men.

In a not-so-shocking outcome, the Best Picture and Best Director categories do not include any female nominees despite critical praise for films directed and produced by women this year.

Following in the footsteps of the HFPA and its Golden Globes, the Academy failed to nominate any women in the two major categories leaving highly buzzed-about films by Debra Granik (“Leave No Trace”), Lynne Ramsay (“You Were Never Really There”), Chloe Zhao (“The Rider”) and Tamara Jenkins (“Private Life”) out of the respective awards races.

Director Marielle Heller didn’t manage a nomination for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” but the stars of her film — Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant — each earned acting nods. The film also nabbed a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for co-writers Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty.

Since 1977, only five women have been nominated in the Best Director category, with Kathryn Bigelow as the only female filmmaker to ever take home the prize for “The Hurt Locker” in 2009. Last year, the Academy nominated Greta Gerwig in the Best Director category for “Lady Bird”.

Female directors fared slightly better in other categories, with director Nadine Labaki earning a nomination in the Best Foreign Film category for “Capernaum”; in the Best Documentary race, Betsy West and Julie Cohen landed a nod for “RBG”. Their documentary about Ruth Bader Ginsburg is up against the climbing doc “Free Solo”, co-directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.

The Oscars will be held on Feb. 24. The full list of nominations can be found here.
