Lone Scherfig’s Fine One Day

Focus Features

USA Today offers up the first look at Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in >One Day, director Lone Scherfig’s follow-up to An Education which is described as “the British answer to When Harry Met Sally.”

The film is an adaptation of David Nicholls’s novel revolving around Dexter (Sturgess) and Emma (Hathaway), who meet for the first time during their graduation in 1988 and proceed to meet on July 15, or St. Swithin’s Day, every year for 20 years. The story tracks their lives and loves until they realize they are meant for each other. As the USA Today article says, the one difference between this film and When Harry Met Sally is Dex and Em “know they love each other.”

Scherfig just finished production a little over a week ago and is now heading into the editing room to piece together the narrative which spans Scotland, London and Paris, ending with a final scene taking place at Big Ben by dawn.

Scherfig tells USA Today’s Susan Wloszczyna, “It’s like 20 small films put together.”

Focus Features will release One Day in theaters sometime Fall 2011, when I can only assume we’ll be debating its Oscar merits.
