Netflix In January: Here Are The Best New Family Movies And Shows To Stream

STREAM TOWN — It’s a new year, but it’s also a new month, which means new titles are now available to stream.

But with all these new options how do you know what to watch? That’s why I’m here, to help you navigate the vast ocean of new streaming titles.

Here’s a look at the best new streaming titles in January:

Indiana Jones” trilogy

Available now

Not too much to say here. The famous Dr. Jones has made his way to Netflix and I for one will be happy to enjoy his adventures yet again — this time in streaming form.

You’ll see I said it was the Jones trilogy because let’s just pretend like that is where it ended. They might have all four, but I didn’t care to look. The first three are now on Netflix and that’s all that matters.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Available now

Speaking of Harrison Ford (kind of) “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is now streaming on Netflix.

Personally, I thought this movie was a bit of a letdown, even though it probably had the most potential out of any movie from 2018. While it wasn’t the fun adventure the galaxy’s biggest scoundrel deserved, it had its moments and is worth a watch when you’ve got nothing else going on.

Hell or High Water

Available now

Writer Taylor Sheridan may not have a lot of titles on his resume, but the ones he does are strong. He’s penned “Sicario,” “Wind River” and my personal favorite “Hell or High Water.”

The film is a taut thriller filled with pinpoint dialogue, brilliant characters and fantastic performances. Ben Foster and Chris Pine play bank-robbing brothers in this modern-day western that was one of my favorite movies of 2016.

If you are a fan of westerns and character studies then you are going to love “Hell or High Water,” and it is now streaming on Netflix.

“Hell or High Water” is rated R for some strong violence, language throughout and brief sexuality.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Available Jan. 29

It’s hard not to have superhero fatigue at this point with a new hero showing up every few months in the theater, but “Ant-Man and the Wasp” was a nice distraction.

The film is funny, clever and full of charm and is one of my favorites from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s no “Thor: Ragnarok,” but it’s for sure worth a watch.

Netflix adding 79 titles, dropping 47 in January

Netflix will have you set up in the new year: The streaming platform will add 79 titles in January, with a full slate of movies both new and old.

Incredibles 2

Available Jan. 30

If you’re looking for a great family movie night then January 30 is a day you want to mark on your calendar. The 2018 Pixar film “Incredibles 2” is headed to Netflix and you can guarantee the Clyde family will be watching it multiple times.

The film was a worthy addition to the “Incredibles” franchise and got us excited to see what was next for the Parr family.

Amazon Prime

A Beautiful Mind

Available now

In my opinion, Ron Howard hasn’t made a really good movie since the early 2000s and one of his all-time best films is now on Amazon Prime.

“A Beautiful Mind” is a heartbreaking and inspirational story boasting incredible performances from Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. The movie won several Academy Awards, including wins for Howard for best director, Connelly for best actress, Akiva Goldsman for best writing and for best picture.

Leave No Trace

Available now

Not many people have heard of the 2018 movie “Leave No Trace,” but now that it’s on Amazon Prime maybe more of us can get a look at it.

The film stars the always powerful Ben Foster and tells the story of a father and his teenage daughter as their minimalist lives are changed forever. If Foster isn’t enough for you to check out the film (which he should be) then maybe the fact it boasts a perfect 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes will.

Available now

Don’t say his name three times, but you can watch the movie as many times as you like. Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy “Beetlejuice” is now on Hulu and us children of the 80s can relive our favorite weird comedy from a weird decade.

I still say this is one of Michael Keaton’s best performances.

Here's everything coming and going on Hulu in January

Hulu will kick off the new year by adding several kid-friendly titles.

Available now

Remember when Matthew McConaughey only made absurd romcoms where he was contractually obligated to take his shirt off at some point? Ever wonder when the world was turned on its head and he started taking strong-character driven parts that left a mark on you? The answer to that is “Mud.”

This 2013 film from Jeff Nichols is a slow-burn thriller at its best and may even be in my top 10 favorite films. McConaughey is phenomenal in the role and the storytelling is mesmerizing.

The movie may not be for everyone, but if you like strong storytelling and building tension then you’re going to love "Mud.”

Prince of Egypt

Available now

I love showing my kids movies I loved watching as a kid and that’s why I’m excited to watch “The Prince of Egypt” with them now that it’s streaming on Hulu.

“The Prince of Egypt” is a dramatic retelling of the story of Moses from the Old Testament and is one of the more infectious animated films I’ve seen. The music is memorable, the jokes are clever and the animation is stunning.

The filmmakers may have changed quite a bit from the book, but it makes for a great family film worth streaming.
